BAYOU City Community Court
BAYOU City Community Court serves as the community outreach arm of the Harris County Criminal Courts at Law.
The initiative builds upon the criminal misdemeanor judges’ restorative approach to criminal justice, which aims to identify and address root causes of crime, stop the cycle of recidivism, and make the community safer in the process.
Community Court was launched in 2022. It focuses on rehabilitative justice, as well as community education, outreach, and service.
BAYOU serves as anacronym for Bringing Assistance to You with Outreach & Understanding.
Community Court Programs
Fresh Start Criminal Record Screening & Sealing
The second-chance program helps eligible community members change course after experiences with the criminal justice system by sealing their eligible criminal records and connecting them to community resources.
Know Your Rights Housing Workshop for Landlords & Tenants
The workshop aims to help both landlords and tenants better understand their housing rights. Sessions focus on topics such as contracts, rights and expectations, and the eviction process.
Don’t Judge a Book By its Cover Book Club for Law Students
The small-group book club provides local law students with the unique opportunity to engage with the judiciary while fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse perspectives within the legal community.
Court Education
The initiative connects judges and court staff with outreach opportunities - such as class courtroom tours, panel discussions,and guest speakerships - to help educate the community about the judiciary and criminal justice system.
